Re: Demonstration victims

To:
Director General of Community Guidance for Christian Protestant
Jakarta

To whom it may concern:

We, Jawi Wetan Christian Church (GKJW) congregation of Surabaya
Block 12, would like to report the mass demonstration which was happening
on Sunday, June 9, 1996. It is described as follows:

1. The congregation of GKJW of block 12 consists of 226
families, with 865 people of 550 adults and 315 children.
Block 12 is a part of the ministry of GKJW congregation of
Surabaya, which office is located at Jl. Mayjen Prof. Dr.
Moestopo 25-27, Surabaya. The congregation meets regularly
at the church building on Jl. Sidotopo Indah Wetan 2/26,
Surabaya.

2. On Sunday, June 9, 1996, we celebrated the Unduh-unduh,
or Harvest, day. There were 277 attendees. The celebration
began at 8 am and ended at 10 am. During the ceremony, we
collected the offering called natura, which would be auctioned
after the service ended. The congregation was dismissed after the
auction ended at 11am.

3. After the service was over, 8 (eight) people of the
congregation stayed over to clean up the sanctuary. At 11:30am,
a big number of people (approximately 500) walked in with
planks of wood, iron, crow bars, and rocks in their hands.
They came through and wrecked the front & side gates and the
church doors. Then, they smashed all the windows at the first
and the top floors, and demolished all church accessories.
They also smashed the roofs, the ceiling, and the lightings.
Practically, they destroyed everything inside the church building.
Evidently unsatisfied with the results, they beat up those
8 people who were cleaning the church building. (The total
damage calculation is included at the end of this report.)

4. Anticipating the situation, 5 (five) of the church people
managed to escape. Being a martial arts expert, one of them
who is a Navy veteran, escaped too, but had experienced some
beatings. The other two were not as fortunate as the six, and
suffered intense beatings.

5. The demonstrants left the church building at 12:30pm after
the policemen came. At 4:30pm, the victims were brought to the
General Hospital of Dr. Sutomo, Surabaya.

6. Here we concluded the report. We will appreciate any given
consideration and any action taken.

Yours sincerely,
Block 12 Areal Ministers
