Here are some tips to read the symbols that are used in the music notation (c = do) _5 means low 5 (low g) ~5 or 5~ means high 5 (high g) b means flat so b5 means g flat # means sharp so #5 means g sharp _ means 1/8 note _ example 5 6 each 5 and 6 is a 1/8 note instead of 1/4 note _ . 3 the dot and the 3 are both 1/8 note = means 1/16 note = example . 3 the dot and the 3 are both 1/16 note _ = 4 . 3 means the dot and the 3 are both 1/16 note the 4 is a 1/8 note the dot combined with the 3 is worth 1/8 _3_ means triol _3_ example 5 6 7 those three notes are a triol I hope this would help Please let me know if you have any difficulties. (mail to kurniawa@cae.wisc.edu) Q&A by Benny Tjahjono ________________ / PRAISE & WORSHIP \ """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Q: Is it possible to send your posting in binary format and write it in a more legible way (I'm not sure what kind of application would be suitable)? The reason I ask is because I have a really hard time reading the notes, meaning I don't know which one is 1/4, 1/16, 1/32 ....etc. And I'm not sure what this ~ means. I call this thing a twiddle..... A: I'm not sure if I will re-write the songs again in the more legible way such as in Cakewalk unless it is quite necessary, if this is what you wish. When I began to start typing songs for FICA-net, there was no legitimate standard of putting notes in the ASCII-based character form which is the standard character of most basic Internet communication, unless via Mosaic WWW-server (at least that is what I know of). Thus, I had to devise with my own standard, as what I'd explain below: Let's take an example: a song published by Integrity! Hosanna Music called "A Thankful Heart" from the recent album "As For My House" Praise & Worship, HMD058. The reasons I picked up this song is because it contains some triple notes, along with 1/4 and 1/8 notes, with a full octave vocal range in G Ionian (major) scale. (It has a nice upbeat moderate reggae rhythm, too!) >From line 1: G C Am D7 G C Am _ = _ _3 _ _3 _ 0 0 ~3 ~3 ~5 | ~5 . . . | 0 0 ~2 ~5 ~4 | ~3 ~1 6 . . | 0 0 A thankful heart creates a thankful home The first 0 is 1/8 note (having 1/2 beat); this note has ~ (twiddle) sign before it, meaning it is played/sung one octave higher. For lower notes, I use _ (underscore) sign before it, such as _7. For the next higher/lower notes, I would just cascade the sign. The second 0 and the next note (~3) are 1/16 notes (having 1/4 beat). The second ~3 and the next note (~5) are 1/8 notes. The second ~5 is 1/4 note, having a full beat. Then, on the third measure, ~2, ~5, and ~4 notes are connected by a "look-like-a-1/8-notes" beam with a number 3 in the middle; these are triple notes. Three notes of equal duration which take up the same total times as two notes of the same written value constitute a triplet ("Every Musician's Handbook", Amsco Publications). So, these notes together have 2 full beats. Still in the topic of triplets, I'd like to make an important note here: I shouldn't have used a 1/8-note beam between ~2 and ~5, and between ~5 and ~4, because consequently they together must have had one full beat, instead of two. I would correct this 'typo' in the future postings. (In the mean time, I haven't decided yet how to represent 2-beat triplets. Any ideas would be appreciated!) For additional information, I always put a beam at the next character space following the first corresponding note. The second corresponding note may or may not be at the other end of the beam, depending upon the location of the syllabus below that corresponds to it. For example, from the first measure, ~5 note is a little bit 'off' the right end of the beam, because following the syllabus "-ful" below it. In some generally possible cases, the second note will be at the next character space, continuing just after the right end of the beam. For now, I'll stop here.
